SKELLY Oil Company was founded by William Grove (W.G.) Skelly in 1919. Prior to that date the company had briefly operated under the name MIDLAND REFINING COMPANY and SKELLY-SANKEY OIL COMPANY. On October 2, 1919 the forty-one-year-old founder declared, "There's no room in this industry for just another oil company...but there is room for a company that will have as its policy the making of everything it sells better. That will be the policy of SKELLY Oil Company!"
SKELLY had business headquarters in Tulsa, Oklahoma...refinery headquarters in El Dorado, KS...and eventually marketing headquarters in Kansas City Missouri (Their name can still be seen on their building towering above The Countryclub Plaza.)
SKELLY operated throughout the mid-west until 1977 when Getty Oil acquired the company. They continued to produce and market SKELLY products until shortly thereafter, when Texaco purchased Getty and the SKELLY brand name disappeared altogether.
